POW! WOW! LONG BEACH 2015: MURALS, PAINTINGS AND A MOVIE PREMIERE

July 12, 2015

From June, 21st to June 27th POW! WOW! organized their latest mural festival in Long Beach, California – a festival, which has its roots in Hawaii but managed to expand to different cities all around the world. Nowadays, POW! WOW! is internationally known for bringing all kinds of artists together in order to connect them with each other and to provide space for their work. This year, POW! WOW! made stop in Long Beach and pushed it to the next level: Besides organizing large scale walls for muralists to paint, they set up a breathtaking exhibition, artist talks and a screening of our documentary ”The Deepest Depths of the Burrow”.

Scroll down to see how we spent our time there:

During POW! WOW! muralists from all over the world are given the opportunity to paint public walls. Next to artists like Tristan Eaton, Jeff Soto, James Jean, Low Bros, Madsteez, Fafi and many more, Nychos was invited to realize two murals in Los Angeles:

NYCHOS / ”ANATOMY OF CANIS LUPUS” / CULVER CITY / L.A. 2015

The first one is located on the wall of an art supply store in Culver City. It’s a wolf, who lies in wait beneath the two trees in front of the building. (In case he likes cars, he won’t have trouble finding his prey over there.)

NYCHOS / ”CAPTAIN HERCULES FIGHTING HYDRA” / CONTAINER YARD / L.A 2015

Nychos’ second mural can be found in Downtown L.A.. It shows the fight between Captain Hercules and Hydra, and is a fusion of two stories: One goes back to the greek mythology, where Hercules is given the task to kill Hydra, a nine headed snake that grows two new heads for every decapitated one. The other story refers to a comic book published by none other than Marvel, where Captain America fights the identically named terrorist organization Hydra. When merging these two plots, Nychos creates the story of Captain Hercules, who is battling a multi-headed snake and its skeleton. Covered with the translucent skin of a lion and equipped with the attributes of both heroes – Hercules’ spear and Captain America’s shield – Nychos’ character appears on multiple layers, visually as well as substantially.

THE DEEPEST DEPTHS OF THE BURROW – PREMIERE / ART THEATRE OF LONG BEACH

In the course of POW! WOW! we’ve also had the third stop of our ”The Deepest Depths of the Burrow’‘ America Tour at the Art Theatre of Long Beach. It turned out to be one of  the best opportunities to watch the movie together with a lot of people who were involved in the process of the making and with artists who are featured in the documentary. The screening was a real pleasure and we are happy about every single visitor who made it to the sold out screening.

EXHIBITION: ”VITALY & VERVE – TRANSFORMING THE URBAN LANDSCAPE” /  LONG BEACH MUSEUM OF ART

On June 25th, the Long Beach Museum of Art opened its doors for the group exhibition ”Vitaly & Verve – Transforming the Urban Landscape”, which was realized in cooperation with POW! WOW!. Shortly summarized: The line up is amazing and the exhibition turned out epic. We were stoked to hear that the museum broke the record in its 65-year history with over 3.000 guests at the opening night. This is probably one of the best feedbacks you can get nowadays – with good reason:
